FAQ

HOW DO I GET MY LOCAL BOOKSTORE TO CARRY MY BOOK?
Any bookstore can carry your book. They simply order from their normal distribution catalog. The challenge comes in convincing them to carry it. They have limited shelf space, and millions of titles competing for that shelf space. One way to get your book on their shelf is to host a book event. Call the bookstore, and ask to talk to the event coordinator. Book events are lots of fun and an excellent way to market your book. Use the Host a Book Event handout to guide you.

WHY ISN’T MY BOOK SELLING VERY MUCH?

What are you doing to market your book? There are many wonderful books on the market that go unnoticed simply because the author does nothing to bring it to the attention of book browsers and buyers. Book sales depend upon marketing, and marketing is a continual effort. The more effort you put into exposure, the more sales you’ll be rewarded with. The good news is that books don’t carry expiration dates, so if you step away from marketing for a time, you can pick up right where you left off when you’re ready.

Consider the case of Chicken Soup for the Soul. Jack Canfield and his coauthor were rejected by over 150 publishing companies before a little publisher in Florida agreed to accept Chicken Soup for the Soul. Once published, Jack operated by the Rule of 5s. Every day he did 5 things that marketed his book. Eventually that hard work paid off, and Chicken Soup for the Soul is now a household brand.

For maximum sales, consider investing in a publicist or PR firm with a strong background in book launches who can guide you through different possibilities that give you the biggest exposure for your budget.

WHAT ARE LOW-COST WAYS TO MAXIMIZE EXPOSURE AND DRIVE SALES?

  • Establish a presence on Quora.com and/or Reddit.com by answering questions. This will help establish your credibility and provide free exposure to your book (include the book as part of your byline).
  • Host a Facebook Live Q&A, tackling tough questions about your book’s key message. Mention your book at both the beginning and end.
  • Create a YouTube channel and upload 2-3 minute videos, each one focused on answering a question or providing a helpful tip. Include the book in your About description.
  • Conduct a Facebook poll by asking one question about your topic and key message that invites dialogue. Offer entry into a free book giveaway for those who answer the poll.
  • Immerse yourself in 2 to 3 social media platforms that make the most sense. With many to choose from, learn the personality of each platform and then decide whether it would be advantageous to become part of that culture.
  • Add a photo of your book to your social media banners.
